Whether mountaineering in demanding alpine conditions or spending long days conquering multi-pitch ascents, the Mutant 38 is fine-tuned for vertical ice and steep terrain. Developed with the help of local guides and athletes and honed over years of abuse in extreme conditions, its close-to-body fit and refined feature-set promotes safety and stability in even the worst of conditions. New colors, advanced fabrics and refined features make the latest iteration of Mutant 38 even more formidable than its predecessor, proving that the evolution isn’t done yet. The whole Mutant family benefits from the addition of lightweight, recycled NanoFly and robic fabrics for impressive durability and lower environmental impact than virgin materials.

Osprey Mutant 38 – Outdoor Gear Lab Editor’s Choice Award
For the second year in a row, the Osprey Mutant is our Editor’s Choice Award winner. The Mutant is a feat of pack design and engineering. It has an impressive ability to haul heavy loads with (relative) ease, then mutate into a summit machine. You can strip it down to the essentials for a lightweight summit push while retaining the features you need to keep your technical equipment secure and accessible on the climb. The pack is only 38 liters, but we can pack it with equipment for trips that usually require a 50-liter pack. We attribute this to a thoughtful suite of features and a tapered design that accommodates lightweight but bulky items like jackets or tents at the top of the pack. If your climbing kit is lightweight, we think you’ll be able to stretch the boundaries of the Mutant, allowing it to replace at least a couple of packs in your quiver.Outdoor Gear Lab, 2018.
Sizing and Fitting of your Osprey Pack
Fit is the key to pack performance. Take the time to get it right. Most Osprey packs are available in multiple sizes to fit a range of torso lengths. To find your torso length, have a friend measure your back along the spine (as shown in the picture below) from the level of your iliac crest (the top of your hipbones) to your C7 (the knobby bone at the base of your neck).
Use the table below to determine your pack size.
Mutant 38 Litre Backpack | Small/Medium | Medium/Large |
